It results from the bite of the lone star tick, which introduces alpha-gal—a sugar found in mammals—into the body. Individuals with AGS may experience severe reactions to foods and products containing alpha-gal, sometimes without prior awareness of the allergy. Reactions can also occur from trace amounts in ingredients such as gelatin, glycerin, carrageenan, and animal-derived substances in personal care products, including tallow, lanolin, soaps, and moisturizers.
