Barrier Relations- The Sebum and Microbiome Factor with Dr. Erin Madigan-Fleck

The stratum corneum forms a lipid- and protein-rich, cornified surface that provides essential lipids, antimicrobial peptides, enzymes, salts, and other compounds, supporting the skin’s protective functions and barrier integrity. The skin’s biological functions create an adaptive ecosystem in which cells, the microbiome, lipid components, and internal and external environments interact and communicate. The microbiome, consisting of billions of microorganisms, closely interacts with epidermal lipids that form the outer barrier, playing a key role in maintaining skin health. This lecture will discuss the microbiome’s interconnectedness, its cohesive interaction with lipid biology, and its functional role in synergistic skin barrier health.
