JUNE 2026 MONTHLY BLOG
By Laura Hunnewell
Dealing with acne at any age can be stressful and frustrating! Breakouts and flares can occur with hormonal changes, diet, stress, genetics, and more. While there is no magic cure, we can always work to get to the root of the problem, soothe the skin, and find the proper care for our clients.
If you are looking to deepen your understanding, consider signing up for one of our advanced training courses offered by the education team at Hale & Hush. Check the website periodically for classes. We offer specialized education and acne protocols that can truly benefit your clients suffering from breakouts.
Know when to treat and know when to stop. Make sure you are not promising a client results for something you cannot—and should not—treat. Once acne becomes systemic, presents as severe cystic lesions, or is unresponsive to your clarifying facials, it might be a medical issue beyond our scope—and that is okay. Our goal is simply to help the client get the comprehensive care they need.
Establishing a relationship with a good dermatologist in your area is essential to a successful esthetics practice. I keep cards on my shelf for clients when I feel a condition requires medical intervention. Over the years, I have established a great networking relationship with a local dermatologist. I know and trust her, and she knows how to work with clients in a gentle, reassuring way. The reciprocity is wonderful; she also keeps my cards handy for patients who want facial services that her medical office does not provide. This sort of relationship supports both sides of care for the client and patient, demonstrating that you care for their overall wellbeing.
The Role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymphatic Drainage facials, when performed correctly, can be incredibly beneficial to acne sufferers. Because MLD helps promote the natural healing process, it is typically performed on clean, dry skin without product. The slow, rhythmic movements encourage a “rest and digest” state—in other words, it activates your body’s parasympathetic nervous system.
When working with active breakouts, we work around the acne rather than directly on top of the lesions. Opening the channels in the neck first before moving onto the face stimulates circulation and lymph vessel motility. This speeds up healing and helps reduce inflammation.
When I perform MLD in the treatment room, it is done on clean, dry skin and finished with a layer of Hush Hydrate Gel and 2 or 3 drops of Remedy Rehab Oil. If you plan to perform any extractions or specialized treatments, those should be done before the lymphatic work. This order of care promotes healing and relaxation for the client—and as we all know, stress is a major aggravator of acne.
Product Pairings for Professional Tools
In our last blog, we talked a lot about the benefits of facial tools. This month, I wanted to take some time to introduce some of our acne-safe products to use alongside them. Our stainless-steel rollers and mushrooms (always chill, but never freeze) are incredible for soothing inflamed, irritated skin when paired with Remedy Rehab Oil.
Remedy Rehab Oil contains a balancing blend of soothing ingredients:
- Jojoba Seed Oil: a super hydrator that is very close to our skin’s natural sebum to seal in hydration. Additionally, Vitamin E shields against premature aging, boosts collagen, and calms irritations like sunburns.
- Squalane: A lightweight emollient excellent for softening and smoothing the skin. It is a fantastic option for dry, irritated skin, as it has been shown to quickly calm redness and inflammation.
- Watermelon Seed Oil: Rich in linoleic acid, it balances acne-prone skin by regulating sebum. It also helps even skin tone, balance the complexion
- Sacha Inchi Seed Oil: A non-comedogenic oil rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, offering potent anti-inflammatory benefits that accelerate healing.
- Meadowfoam Seed Oil: Meadowfoam Seed Oil: A fast-absorbing, non-greasy oil that mimics natural sebum to balance oil production. Adds powerful protection against environmental stress.
Deep Cleansing & Clarifying Homecare
Our Charcoal Clarifying Mask is a great suggestion for your clients to use at home, and an excellent product to incorporate into your professional deep-cleaning facials. It is super easy to work with, smells pleasant, and isn’t like other charcoal masks that are hard to remove from the skin. This mask targets breakouts in a few ways by clearing, balancing, and healing.
Key ingredient highlights include:
- AHA Complex: Helps gently remove the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing fresh, new cells underneath.
- Activated Charcoal: By binding to surface bacteria and impurities, it purifies the skin and helps minimize the appearance of enlarged pores while improving overall skin texture.
- Black Currant Seed Oil: Rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory effects. Packed with antioxidants, it defends against environmental distress and naturally encourages healing.
- Watermelon Fruit Extract: A natural, antioxidant-rich hydrator that helps soothe irritation, protect the skin from environmental stressors, and support a balanced, even complexion.
Clarify Wash Clarify Wash is Quiet Wash’s new pal in the cleanser lineup. When you need a little extra deep-cleansing action, it’s there for you. Use the wash on your back and chest, too.
Clarify Wash features:
- Mandelic Acid (DL): A chirally correct, naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. It effectively retextures the skin, controls excess sebum, and unclogs pores, yet remains gentle and non-irritating.
- Arginine (L): A chirally correct amino acid that provides many benefits including healing, hydration and decreasing inflammation. Additionally, it strengthens the skins barrier.
- Snow Mushroom Extract: A super-hydrator that holds moisture up to 400 times more effectively than hyaluronic acid to naturally brighten, repair, and heal the skin barrier.
- Black Currant Seed Oil: Rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory effects. Packed with antioxidants, it defends against environmental distress and naturally encourages healing.
Essential Hydration
- Giant Knotweed: A potent skin protector with high antioxidant activity that shields the skin from environmental stressors. Other key benefits include immediate and long-term moisturization, brightening, and visible redness reduction.
- Squalane: A lightweight emollient that softens and smooths the skin while working to reduce redness and calm inflammation.
- Neem Leaf Extract: a plant extract that has been shown to help reduce blemishes, brighten the skin, reduce inflammation, promote wound healing, and reveal healthy looking skin.
- Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract: A natural humectant that binds moisture to the skin while delivering instant cooling, anti-inflammatory, and healing benefits.
- Turmeric Root Extract: A renowned skin healer that helps regulate sebum production and is incredibly calming and soothing.
Some takeaways and common-sense rules for wellness
With summer coming, it feels great to do more outside and enjoy a day at the beach or pool. But remember that too much sun is not only bad for the skin, but it can also further irritate acne. Enjoy everything in moderation, ensure your diet is as diverse as possible, and stay well-hydrated. Remember to shower after working out, change your pillowcase regularly, and use a fresh washcloth every day so it doesn’t harbor bacteria.
Above all, don’t pick. Please remind your clients that picking at their skin just spreads acne, increases inflammation, and can lead to scarring or infection. Breaking the habit is tough, but it’s essential for their skin’s healing process.
