APRIL 2026 MONTHLY BLOG

By Laura Hunnewell

It is a beautiful spring day! We can finally shed the winter layers, and it feels so good—but your eyes are puffy, dry, and red. Is it pollen? Seasonal allergies flaring up? These environmental triggers do not just affect our sinuses; they affect our skin and our energy levels, often making us feel sluggish at the most inconvenient times of day.

How Your Skin Functions as Your Body’s Natural Shield

Why does the air outside affect your skin so deeply? Susan Fox, MMS, PA-C, an Allergy and Immunology Provider at Rush University Medical Center, explains:

“The skin is the largest organ in our body which acts as the first line of defense for our immune system. It is not only a physical barrier, but it contains an intricate network of immune cells to help fight infection and repair injury. Because the skin can often signal other medical problems elsewhere in the body, it is important that a person be encouraged to consult with their healthcare provider to address any underlying causes of a skin condition.”

Lighten Up

Boost your skin with antioxidants and environmental protection for the day. Cleanse with Quiet Wash and apply Rare C Serum, Hush Hydrate Gel, and Broad-Spectrum SPF 30.

As humidity rises, your skin might not require as much heavy moisture as it did during the dry winter months. Mixing Refine Polish with your Quiet Wash gives a thorough cleanse without over-scrubbing. Soothe Essence Serum with a drop or two of Remedy Rehab Oil before bed is an enjoyable way to refresh the skin and seal in moisture.

Nightly Reset

Pollen from trees or flowering plants is a miraculous thing, but for us humans, it is often an irritant.

  • Shower at Night: Ensure you remove allergens from your skin and hair before getting into bed; this also helps set a rhythm for peaceful sleep. Did you know Quiet Wash doubles as a sensitive skin body wash? It has you covered from head to toe.
  • Temperature Control: If your eyes are burning and your face feels itchy, wash with lukewarm rather than very warm water.
  • Eye Care: Use cool, wet, disposable 4x4s to remove cleanser around the eyes to avoid irritation or apply them as a cool compress. Apply a layer of Brilliant Eye and Lip Serum to lock in scent-free hydration.

Clear the Air Inside

I love Molekule air purifiers for both the home and studio; they destroy a wider range of pollutants compared to conventional purifiers and look nice in any space!

Be mindful of burning incense in your skincare studio, as the smoke can be a trigger for reactive skin and lungs. If you use sage or palo santo to clear your space between clients, be aware this can also irritate allergy sufferers. Time these rituals wisely.

Professional Solutions: The In-Studio Facial

The best way to transition your skincare is with a professional facial! This clears away dead skin cells left over from winter and preps your barrier for the temperature changes ahead. To keep the barrier intact against environmental stressors, we recommend masks that treat without stripping, such as the Berry Boost Mask for an antioxidant infusion or the Charcoal Mask for drawing out seasonal impurities.

Pro-Tip for Peers: Consider a promotion tailored for allergy-strained skin. If you have an LED panel, try offering a complimentary 20-minute session with every spring booking. To ensure a safe environment, remind clients to reschedule if they are experiencing symptoms of a contagious cold. Additionally, advise them to avoid high-intensity outdoor activities, like tennis or running, immediately following their treatment. A simple rule: Work out first, facial after.

Professional Solutions: The Spring Reset Home Care Rituals

Keep your clients engaged with a personalized home care kit featuring Hale & Hush products. Add a custom note on your branded stationery to create a memorable ritual. It is a lovely touch to include a small gift, such as a soothing tea or dark chocolate, to promote self-care.

  • The Berry Boost Kit: Our green reusable travel bag, small Quiet Wash, Berry Boost retail mask and brush, Soothe Essence Serum, Hush Hydrate Gel and Broad Spectrum SPF 30.
  • The Charcoal Reset Kit: Our green reusable travel bag, small Quiet Wash, Charcoal Mask and brush, Soothe Essence Serum, Hush Hydrate Gel and Broad Spectrum SPF 30.

The reusable green travel bags are a super way to package your kits.  They also pack well on trips and are easy to wipe down.  One last thing to add would be a small journal for your clients to track lifestyle factors and weather, helping them identify their unique skin triggers.

Mindful Maintenance

Seasonal allergies can be exhausting. When you feel like you need to rest or nap—it is often your body’s way of asking you to slow down and listen to it.  While our culture focuses on a fast-paced lifestyle, it is vital that we care for ourselves as practitioners so we can provide the best service for others. If you cannot stop to smell the flowers this season, please at least take a moment to admire them!

“Let us dance in the sun, wearing wild flowers in our hair.”
